#153 - Celebrity Sleep

It’s Superbowl Sunday! … And all I know about this sporting event - besides the awesome commercials - is that Taylor Swift is going out with one of the dudes in one of the teams.

But don’t ask me who is playing.

And if you asked me to name a Taylor Swift song, I wouldn’t know one.

That’s probably like me asking you to name a TOOL song, right?

Well, this week I was asked:

Whether Taylor Swift will escape jet lag because she is flying by private jet from Japan to Las Vegas (a momentary departure from her Eras Tour in Tokyo to watch her boyfriend play in the Superbowl).

My first response may have been a little offensive …

A Teleporter …

… hasn’t been invented yet, but when it does get invented, no one will be able to escape jet lag.

People experience jet lag because their physical body travels across many timezones - way faster than their body clock can change its timing.

So the short answer is that a private jet ain’t gonna help Taylor’s circadian rhythm move faster from Japan to the USA compared to a commercial plane.

I’ve seen the data from my PhD mentors, and to me it looks like the circadian rhythm can change by about 30 minutes per day.

And 30-min per day is how fast we have been changing clients’ circadian timing for the past 20 years.

Practically every time we try to go faster - like 45-min/day or 60-min/day … it doesn’t work.

How do we change the timing of the circadian rhythm of our clients?

So Will Taylor Swift’s Jet lag Be Bad?

TS only started her new tour last week in Japan. Unless she’s been in Japan for a few weeks, then her body clock may actually be located somewhere else in the world.

Like I said, I don’t really follow Taylor’s exploits.

But freelance writer Molly Longman informed me that last weekend TS was at the Grammy’s - which was held in Los Angeles.

Molly also informed me that Taylor was a self-confessed night owl.

Molly was really helpful during this interview!

So if we assume that TS’s body clock was originally located in Pacific Time, then this is TS’s recipe for jet lag at the Super Bowl …

What Does Tool Think Of TS?

I don’t actually know what they think right now …

But back in 2019, it seemed unheard of for anyone to rival TS on the scoreboard (aka, Billboards).

But after 13-years of grinding silence, TOOL released Fear Inoculum which ended up outselling Taylor’s 2019 Lover.

Which left many TS fans crying “who is this new band?”

note: for reference, TOOL have been around since the 90s.

This led to a bit of fun between the two top selling albums by artists starting with the letter ‘T’ …

Conclusions?

Celebrities cannot escape sleep issues, just like Taylor Swift could not escape jet lag by using a private plane.

And it’s not just jet lag or crappy sleep hygiene because you’re sleeping on a tour bus. Take Christina Applegate of Married with Children fame, and more recently Dead to Me. She has spoken publicly about her battles with insomnia …

And she’s not alone. George Clooney, Jennifer Aniston and Mariah Carey have too (according to this website). And many more have been cited as experiencing sleep issues - including Brad Pitt, Martha Stewart and Lady Gaga (according to less credible websites).

But if you understand the risk factors for insomnia, then it makes sense that most celebs will at some point or another experience insomnia. Probably, the only protective factor some of them have is to escape the B/Hollywood life, or be lucky enough to inherit genes that provide them with excellent sleep plasticity.

In any case, I hope they become ambassadors for the best free gift anyone can receive!

I’m sure their fans - followers of pop or prog rock - will benefit.
