#42 - Violent Videogames and Sleep

You’ve probably heard that you shouldn’t use technology in the hour before bed - right?

And you’ve likely heard that violent videogames are terrible for us, including our sleep.

Well back in 2008, we saw there was only one study that had tested this - and that study had a major error - meaning it could not conclude whether violent videogames affected sleep.

So we brought a bunch of teenagers into our sleep lab - and on one night they played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in the hour before their usual bedtime.

On another night they watched TV n the hour before bed.

And they performed both of these activities while in bed.

After these nights, we measured their sleep with the best measure possible - EEG.

What did we find?

Instead of reading about it - how about watching it?

This week we began our new video series on Youtube called ‘What The Sleep’ - where we take viewers through one of our studies, and subject it to:

  • Why Do This Study?

  • What Did We Do?

  • What Did We Find?

  • Where to From Here?

Introducing Episode #1 … Effects of Pre-Sleep Videogaming on Adolescent Sleep.
